Buenos Aires - Jan. 2005 Week 1
Friday. Dec. 31st. First day... getting necessities like water and wine.
For the new year, businesses tore old paper and threw it out onto the street.
Vinh, Sabine, Eric and Jackie shared an apartment.
Vinh looking very professional.
Met Tanya and Jorge and then raced to Luiza and Pulpo's home for New Year's.
There were folks from California, Portland, New York City and Massachusetts!
And even folks from Buenos Aries! Pulpo cooked and Luiza entertained.
Eric with ALL the women.
Saturday Jan. 1st: We were tired.
Of course, not so tired that we couldn't go and have a daiquiri in Recoleta with
our good friend, Jorge.
That night we walked around the Lake in Palermo and then had dinner at Lalo.
Sunday January 2nd: We went to see the gauchos but it was closed. Instead,
we visited the feria and Vinh made friends with everyone.
Afterwards we met with our friend, Hernan, aka poco macho for lunch. I helped Sabine cool down.
Milongas were closed during this period because of a tragedy that occurred during a Rock concert.
Many young people died or were hospitalized. Portenos were upset because the building was not inspected.
My understanding is that the city closed the "dance clubs" to satisfy people's concerns about safety and
to also mourn the loss of lives.
Instead, Sunday night we visited Pete and Marta from New Haven, CT and danced.
They were wonderful hosts and we drank and ate way too much.
Pete and Marta salsaing...
The chokehold and the death drop :-)
Monday January 3rd: We went to our first milonga at Salon Canning. It was hot!
Anna Maria, a favorite teacher, gave us the scoop on all the men.
At this time, Salon Canning was the only milonga open in Buenos Aires. All milongas in the provinces were open.
It was also Jeffrey's last night. He returned to Chicago the next night.
Tuesday January 4th: Brandon arrived and we spontaneously ran off to have a lesson
at Galleria Pacifico and met Emilio from Italy and Carlos from Chicago.
That evening a group of us went to Salon Canning again and ran into Sergio and Anton from
NYC and California. Happy birthday Anton!
Wednesday January 5th: Confiteria Ideal to hear the orchestra Los Reyes
and to drink, talk and dance with good friends. Later that evening, after we had left to go to La National,
the police came and closed down Ideal.
This was the only night we were able to dance in this wonderful cafe.
At La National, the milonga was closed as a precaution at 3 am. This was the beginning
of serious enforcement from the police regarding milongas.
El Beso opened and was closed by the police. Later, even Salon Canning was closed.
Underground parties became commonplace.
Thursday was a day of rest and good eating. oops ... so was friday.
Pulpo and us guys at Lalo...eating again.
