Zhan Jiang - The Orphanage
The Plane from Beijing to Guangzhou
The Bus from Guangzhou to Zhan Jiang
Arriving in Zhan Jiang. Mrs Lin and her son picked us up.
That's Elsa in the back. She works at the orphanage and helps transport babies to
the adoptive parents when they arrive in Guangzhou.
The entrance
This is the new addition where the babies, children, offices, pharmacy and medical staff are.
The babies are on the 7 and 8 th floors. So very different than 18 years ago.
The older building.... Cory was on the third floor. Now the building is used for
older orphans who have jobs and are independent.
This was directly across from where the babies used to be. The third floor
of the lower building is where we met with the government officials prior to seeing Cory.
For several days we played, fed, and held the babies in a big room with a mat on the floor.
We aren't supposed to take pictures, but Mrs. Lin okayed these photos of Cory
holding a one month old that looked like her when she was adopted.
It was extremely emotional for everyone. Many of the families come back to visit
but they do it through an adoptive tour agency and generally have only a limited time to visit.
We were fortunate to be able to visit for 5 days.
I think it was a real turning point for Cory to see how the "nannies"
took such good care of the children. It filled in the first month of her life.
For Paul and I, It was enlightening to see how comfortable she became and
how deeply she bonded with Mrs. Lin and the babies.
We met a young woman, Maria, who was adopted from the orphanage when she was 12 years old.
She found photographs of herself that we had taken when we adopted Cory....
the only photographs she has from that period. We recognized her and
were able to share our memories.
The banquet... the gentleman standing is the Director of the entire orphanage.
Mrs. Lin is the Director for the children's section. The orphanage is also
a "welfare house" and therefore has a section for elders.
A way to smoke tobacco.
